WRITING TIPS

MAKE YOUR WRITING SPELL
R.O.M.A.N.C.E

R ead
Romance spans every sub-genre from suspense and inspirational, to chick lit and page-scorching passion. Read widely, then aim for the sub-genre you enjoy reading.

Opening
Most romance novels are short (from 50,000 words) so plunge straight into the story. Make us want to find out what happens next.

Meeting
Introduce the hero and heroine as soon as you can, then gradually share their background with the reader.

Attraction
It’s a given that these two are instantly, powerfully attracted. Don’t just tell us they’re attracted, show us how and why.

New
Take an old theme such as Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast, and give it your own, original twist.

Conflict
A page-turning plot provides a strong reason why the couple can’t give in to their attraction, known as a conflict. This should be more than a simple misunderstanding.

Ending
The happy ending distinguishes romance novels from other forms of fiction. These days not all romances end in a marriage proposal, but the reader should feel satisfied that everything has turned out as it should.
