Hello, and WELCOME from VALERIE PARV
In July I’m presenting a workshop at the Romance Writers of America’s annual
conference. I promise not to suggest that “all your chooks might turn
into emus and kick your dunny down” - an Aussie 'curse' that your chickens will turn into
large ostrich-like birds and demolish your outdoor bathroom ... hardly an
expression of goodwill.
Not many Aussies talk like that in any case. These days you’ll find elevators
alongside lifts, cookies beside biscuits, and footpaths doubling for pavements.
Australian author, Eleanor Dark, called the language, “English…but not quite”,
as British writer, Monica Dickens found when asked to sign a book to Emma
Chissit. Turns out the buyer was asking the writer the book’s price, how much
is it, in broad Strine, itself a contraction of Australian. You’ll often find
the I sound being used for A, and Ah for R as in G’Dye Myte = Good Day Mate,
the standard Aussie greeting.
Mate, by the way, is any friend however distant, not one’s spouse or partner.
If you’re staying with someone who asks if you want a hot share, it’s not a
financial deal, but a hot shower. And a Sundee Piper is a Sunday (news)paper.
It’s all in the accent!
Just for fun, click
Right now, I’m
flat out
getting ready for the conference, so
see you!
so come back again SOON !
