VALERIE PARV
romancebookswritingnonfictionpresenterideas

International best-selling author, Valerie Parv, has sold more than twenty-nine million copies of her books which have been widely translated, including into manga, and are now available as ebooks.

Valerie is the first Australian writer to receive a Pioneer Award from RT Book Reviews, New York, for her contributions to the field of romance writing. She also proudly serves as an Australia Day Ambassador.

With a master of arts from Queensland University of Technology and a diploma in professional counselling, she conducts seminars and workshops on creativity and the writer’s craft.

Her practical guide to the genre, The Art of Romance Writing (Allen & Unwin 1993, 2004) was voted the most useful book on writing in a poll of members of Romance Writers of Australia. Valerie was contributing editor of Heart and Craft, (Allen & Unwin, 2009) , and How do I Love Thee (Valerie Parv editor, Allen & Unwin, December 2009) a unique collection of stories from Australia’s top selling and award-winning authors.

Valerie loves nothing better than stretching her writing wings. She has written over 50 novels, 24 non-fiction titles, dozens of short stories in major magazines (see Valerie's booklist for a complete list of her books) and has a movie she scripted currently in development.

She has set a number of romantic suspense novels in the fictional island kingdom of Carramer, in the process creating an extensive history, national anthem and royal family tree. Add in an isolated south pacific location and Carramer is the ideal backdrop for Valerie's latest series of science fiction romance novels starting with Birthright (Corvallis Press, USA 2012), featuring what fantasy author, Erica Hayes calls ...

"aliens and evil astronauts" with a side serve of "deadly intrigue, delectable romance, mind bending alien politics and first contact on a tropical island paradise."
The aliens continue their adventures in two related novels, Earthbound and Homeworld

Valerie held Australia’s first romance writing workshop in 1988, which led to the founding of Romance Writers of Australia, and she has been a member ever since. She is also a member of the Australian Society of Authors and The Fellowship of Australian Writers, and has given book signings and talks in New Zealand, Hawaii and North America.

In 1999 Romance Writers of Australia established the Valerie Parv Award in her honour. Valerie mentors the winner during the year of their award, and virtually all past winners are successfully published.

In 1994 the State Library of New South Wales, Australia, began to acquire Valerie’s papers for their collection and continues to acquire material from her.

"These papers detail the author’s career as one of Australia’s most successful writers in the romance genre and include manuscripts of her works and correspondence."
[The State Library Collection, Annual Report]

Now based in country New South Wales, she lived for many years in Australia's capital city, Canberra, where she was a volunteer guide at the National Zoo & Aquarium. She draws on this and other aspects of her life for many of her novels, having spent almost 38 years married to her romantic hero, Paul, a former crocodile hunter in Australia’s tropical north, later a cartoonist and illustrator of many of Valerie's nonfiction books.

No wonder she was described by New Woman magazine as ...

“one of the planet’s most widely read romance fiction writers. Visit Iceland, Korea, Turkey, Bulgaria or Czechoslovakia and you’ll find women curled up with a Parv saga.”

Note the 5 stars. I do not give them lightly. A book really has to be a winner for me to rate it this high!

“... your stories do more than entertain. They encourage the heart, reinforce important values, offer comfort during difficult times and rejuvenate and refresh readers around the world. ... that is a remarkable achievement.”
Donna Hayes, former Publisher and CEO, Harlequin Enterprises
